Overcoming imposter syndrome
It's amazing what a few simple words can do to change your perspective.
Imposter Syndrome Mindset: "I don't know what I'm doing, and it's only a matter of time until everyone finds out."
Growth Mindset: "I don't know what I'm doing yet, and it's only a matter of time until I figure it out." -Carol Dweck
We all suffer from imposter syndrome at some point in our lives, which is normal and healthy. As parents, my wife and I experience this everyday raising our children. But it becomes unhealthy when it holds us back from learning and experiencing growth.
You may not think words matter that much, but think about the type of words you use in your self-talk every day and how they may be negatively impacting you.
Not only is it great to practice this on yourself, but I encourage you to try this with others.
My 8 year old daughter is constantly focused on what she can't do. A week doesn't go by without me hearing hear her say, "I just can't do it!"
My response: "Yes, you're right. You can't do it…yet. But if you work hard enough, you can."
This leads us to sharing examples of when she couldn't do something in the past and now she can. Like riding her bike, or reading books. I also share with her that I, too, couldn't do that and many other things, but I worked hard, practiced, and eventually figured it out.
So next time you feel like you're in an imposter syndrome mindset, be sure to adjust your language and include that crucial word…YET!
