Rituals
What is your peaceful ritual?
I often get teased by friends (who I won't name here!) on how I create more work for myself than necessary when doing simple tasks:
- Making my own latte using an espresso machine vs. ordering from Starbucks.
- Creating thank you notes with my 1929 typewriter vs. sending a text.
- Making my own ice cubes and my 20-step process for making craft cocktails vs. premade drinks.
- Writing every line of code of my website (vejdani.org) by hand vs. using an off-the-shelf solution like WordPress.
- Making pasta from scratch vs. ordering out.
"Where do you find all the time?"
"You know, there's a more efficient way to do this."
Yes, it's all true.
It does take more work to do it this way. And yes, I'm fortunate enough to be able to afford the "easy" way.
But that would mean I would miss out on an opportunity to be in the present moment.
I get satisfaction and find peace in these rituals. I also love the feeling I get when I finish and can see the end result. Not to mention the gratitude when I make them for others - especially the cocktails!
I'm not saying you need to go out and make your life any harder than it is now. But instead of complaining about a chore or task that needs to be done, try to find the beauty and joy in what you're doing and appreciate the fact you get to do these "chores" that benefit others.
